The Application Process Demystified
Applying for life insurance is more straightforward than most people expect. Here's what happens from start to finish.
Step 1: Determine Your Needs
Before you apply, understand what you need:
- How much coverage (death benefit) do you need?
- What type of policy (term or permanent)?
- How long do you need coverage (term length)?
Our tools can help you figure this out before you start shopping.
Step 2: Get Quotes
You can get quotes from:
- Insurance company websites directly
- Independent insurance brokers (who compare multiple companies)
- Online quote comparison tools
Getting quotes doesn't commit you to anything and doesn't affect your credit.
Step 3: Complete the Application
Applications typically ask about:
- Personal information: Name, address, date of birth, Social Security number
- Health history: Medical conditions, medications, family health history
- Lifestyle: Smoking, alcohol use, hazardous activities, travel
- Finances: Income, occupation, existing coverage
- Beneficiaries: Who will receive the death benefit
Step 4: Underwriting
Underwriting is how the insurance company evaluates your risk and determines your rate. This may include:
Traditional Underwriting
- Review of your application answers
- Medical exam (blood, urine, vital signs)
- Medical records request from your doctors
- Motor vehicle and prescription database checks
Accelerated/Simplified Underwriting
- Uses data and algorithms instead of (or in addition to) medical exams
- Often available for healthy applicants and moderate coverage amounts
- Can provide decisions in days instead of weeks
Step 5: Receive Your Offer
After underwriting, you'll receive one of three outcomes:
- Approved at standard rates: The quote you were given
- Approved at rated (higher) rates: Higher premium due to health or lifestyle factors
- Declined: Coverage not available from this insurer
Step 6: Policy Delivery
Once you accept the offer and pay your first premium, your policy is issued. You'll receive policy documents to review and keep.
The "Free Look" Period
Most policies include a "free look" period (typically 10-30 days) during which you can cancel for a full refund if you change your mind.
